History of the Northern Cape Province:
The Northern Cape boasts interesting history and findings! The first people to inhabit this region were the San people. The San people dominated this area, however overtime the San people were pushed out by the arrival of the Europeans and other Africa tribes.
The Dutch came to this area to mine for copper under the governor Simon Van Der Stel. Copper mining dominated this area until diamonds where then discovered under the guidance of Barney Burnato and Cecil John Rhodes. Kimberly boast the only man made open mine hole on South Africa. Kimberly is referred to as the ‘City if Diamonds’ and attracts visitors from far. The Northern Cape is predominantly known for the mining of diamonds and the man-made hole is an magnificent sight to see.
Northern Cape Province formed an integral part of the Anglo-Boer war which occurred between 1899 and 1902. Kimberly was one of the first regions to fall and to besieged to the Boers.
