History of the KwaZulu-Natal:

Kwazulu Natal is a unique province that is filled with interesting historical facts. Kwazulu Natal is known as the Zulu-kingdom of South Africa. And this is the region where Shaka Zulu ruled the Zulu Kingdom.

Vasco da Gama of Portugal saw the coast of Natal on Christmas Day 1497. Christmas in Portuguese is 'Natal', which gave rise to the original name for the region..
In 1823, the Settlers where attracted to the harbour entrance of this region. They believed that this area would be easy to take over and make their own. They arrived at Mthaniya to lay claim to this area.

In the 1830’s the Northern Part of this province was referred to as the Zulu-kingdom and the Southern Part was briefly called ‘Natalia’ when it was the Boer Republic. This area, in 1940, became the ‘British Colony of Natal’, but Zululand remained independent until 1879.
When the Bantustan of KwaZulu, which means "Place of the Zulu" was re-incorporated into the Natal province after the end of Apartheid in 1994, the province of Natal which had existed between 1910 and 1994 was renamed KwaZulu-Natal. The province is home to the Zulu monarchy, and the majority population and language of the province is Zulu. It is also the only province in South Africa which includes the name of its dominant ethnic group in its name
Kwazulu Natal is known as the Garden Province and is still home to the Zulu Nation. The Kwazulu Natal Mountains are called the ‘Barriers of Spears’ and this area is filled with stone age cave painting and legends of the Zulu Kings. Kwazulu Natal is a beautiful Province that has so much to offer. Take a trip to this land and learn more about the past while soaking in the beautiful scenery.
