History of Gauteng:
Gauteng is a province that is filled with history and interesting facts. Gauteng is commonly referred to as a mining and smelting province. This came into occurrence when the ‘Voortrekkers’ moved in the early 19th century, from the British empire, to the Gauteng area. The voortrekkers then made a startling discovery- they discovered Gold! And for years after this province became a mining phenomenon.
The Gauteng Province is home to an amazing discovery. In 1947, Dr Broom discovered a human female skull that dated back to over 2.5 million years ago. This is proof that ages ago, humans did indeed inhabit the Gauteng region. This area is also known as the ‘cradle of humankind’, and this is one of the areas that is commonly believed to have been a place where the human species started to walk upright.
Gauteng is also home to the well know Khoi San people. One can view rock art and cave painting that date back to between 20 000 and 30 000 years ago. These painting where done by the Khoi San people of the region and have become a popular historical tourist attraction.
In 1900 Gauteng (known as Johannesburg then) fell to British rule. Around this time black townships started to establish, such as; Sopiatown and Alexandra. In the 1930’s the Orlando Township was formed and this is the area that the well known Soweto Township evolved from. Most of the Gauteng provinces history is defined by mining and the apartheid era. |
