Eastern Cape - History
|
|
The shoreline of this province extends from the Umtamvuna River in KwaZulu-Natal, to the Storms River mouth on the scenic Garden Route and borders of Lesotho. Today, the Eastern Cape incorporates the previously independent `homelands’ of the Ciskei and Transkei. Despite its colonial past, the Eastern Cape remains the home of the Xhosa-speaking people of South Africa.

History of the Eastern Cape Province:
The Eastern Cape Province filled with cultural history and much of this area is sill waiting to be discovered and explored. This province is known as the traditional home of the Xhosa people. The Xhosa people have helped shape the history of the Eastern Cape.
Historically, the Eastern Cape was home to the San people and their tribe. And this area is filled with amazing cave paintings and art work. The San people have been commonly referred to as the Bushmen people/tribe. Overtime the San people where joined by the Khoi people and they, together, have left their imprint on history in the Kieskamms, Kei, and Tsiskama areas.
About 2000 years ago, the Nguni-speaking people entered the Eastern Cape Province. They brought with them the cattle and faming era and knowledge. The Nguni-speaking people soon became the dominant tribe and absorbed the Khoi and San people. Together they formed a cohesive tribe that helped shape this region.
In the 18th and 19th Centaury colonists tried to actively expand their colonial settlement. However the Xhosa people of the area resisted. This sparked the initial place where all of the wars in South Africa started and independence was reclaimed back.
The Eastern Cape region is still waiting to be discovered, and is filled with beautiful wildlife and flora. |
